A bed with a roof

Have you ever slept in a bed with a roof?

Commonly referred to as a four-poster bed, the term is often used to conjure up romantic stays in posh hotels by couples who might be on they honeymoon.

Despite staying in a beautiful Scottish hotel this weekend, it was certainly no romantic weekend away (and was never meant to be), especially with two z-beds set up at the foot of the bed to accommodate the two children, so the romance of the "Four Poster" completely passed me by.

As I snuggled under the covers next to 21st C Dad. I glanced over to the television to see what 21st C Dad was watching. It is only then that it dawned on me that I was sleeping in a bed with a roof.

I've never slept in a bed with a roof before and I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. It was a very comfortable bed but I'd never realised how much I like to see the ceiling. It might be a case of mild claustrophia but also there is the added factor of the unknown.... who knows what creepy crawlies might be hiding on the roof, ready to crawl down when darkness falls. eeuggh.

On that note, I felt the better option was to turn over, plug in my headphones and close my eyes to the sound of Mika's "Relax, Take It Easy."

So, if you find yourself in a bed with a roof and suffer the same neurosis, I recommend you play the following tune...

The idea of the canopy is actually to keep those bugs from falling on to you, a hangover from the days of thatched roofs full of things running around.

Hi Mark - LOL - in that case I'd also need a huge mosquito net ;-D

Hee hee. We stayed in Torquay last year in a kind of 'Faulty Towers-esque' hotel.
When the lady showed us our room, she grinned at me with glee when she opened the door and introduced us to the most rickety four poster you ever saw, with flapping floral nets around it.

I was more concerned the kids would mistakenly hang themselves from them, than any creepy crawlies on the top. Of course now I will always think of creepy crawlies.
Bleurghh. I just have this image of the biggest spider waiting to pounce. Shivers.

And Mika is cool.

Hi Anonymous - thanks for the tip. Will take a look.

Hi Laura - ah ah...you see, they are really for Honeymooners ;-D

Hello Jo - I wish you'd taken a photo and glad I am now not the only person worried about those mini beasties. I have to go now but I promise I will catch up with the rest of your comments tomorrow. Hope everything is alright with you ;-D
