Postcard from...Bury St Edmunds

We're having a fabulous time in Suffolk. Weather is mixed, so is the food and the range of activities.

This week we enjoyed a brief trip into Bury St Edmunds, which is only a couple of miles from our 'holiday accommodation' in Moreton Hall, (a local suburb which is being featured this weekend on Radio Suffolk.)

Bury St Edmunds is a beautiful historical town, originating from Saxon times, and which became home to one of the most powerful abbeys in mediaeval Europe (ref St Edmundsbury website)

The tower that you see in the 'postcard' is of the abbey gate, the main gateway into The Abbey Gardens, a beautiful park surrounded by the ruins of the old Abbey. The gardens were bought by the borough council in 1953 for
£7,814. 1s 0d and remain well-kept with glorious flower beds, rose garden, herb garden and sensory garden. The banners in front of the Abbey wall are promoting news that thanks to the hard work of Bury in Bloom, the town has been chosen to represent the Anglian region in the Britain in Bloom awards competing against Congleton, Douglas, Kendal, Llandudno in the Small City/Large Town category.

Bury St Edmunds, or (as locals call it) 'Bury', has a wonderful range of restaurants, independent shops and historic features, with a great range of hotel & b&b accommodation. The town is well worth a visit and if you like what you see you might just end up moving here. Check out the excellent Living in Bury St Edmunds Blog for a deeper insight.

Nice pic of the "abbey gate" which gave rise to the name of my electoral ward, "Abbeygate." (Sorry to be picky, 21CM!)

Paul - I can be as pedantic as you and you are definitely as much a pedant as 21st C Dad, so in honour of you both, I've made the change.
